Wasn't the United States founded as a religious nation?

No! In fact the founding fathers went out of their way to make sure it wasn't. If you look at the historical context of the 1700s, many nations such as England, France & Germany had state churches and royalty considered themselves appointed by God. Prohibiting the government from establishing religion was a bold step and sent a loud message to the world that the United States is a secular nation.

But weren't many of the founding fathers Christian?

Yes, but that's not the point. They were also mostly white males but that doesn't make the United States a white male country. A nation is defined by it's principals not by the attributes of it's founders. The United States was founded on the principal of separation of Church and State. Coercing people into saying "one nation under-god" is a violation of this principal and profoundly un-American.

Why am I finding this out for the first time?

Because many religious leaders (not all) seek power above salvation. Sneaking "under God" into the pledge of allegiance was clearly a power grab in contradiction to the teachings of the Bible.

Is all this really that important?

In the years to come, what are some of the grave dangers our civilization will face? One is the threat of nuclear war. Consider that many of the most belligerent nations are also the most religious. Their leaders often justify war based on their interpretation of God's will. Another danger is that of global warming. Yet many religious leaders deride that it even exists.

Keeping religion out of politics may just save our civilization. That makes it critically important.

I believe in God, can I help?

Absolutely! Some of the contributors to this web site believe in God which is not incompatible with believing that spirituality should be separate from government.
